BBC Azeri and Turkish Services Publish Tbilisi Vake Park Protest Photo Story

BBC Azeri yesterday published some of my photos documenting the environmental protest in Tbilisi’s Vake Park and so I paid a return visit the night before to check if there were any new developments. Basically, there are none although legal action has not been rejected by the courts. Instead, more information needs to be provided before any case against the construction can proceed.

Guerrilla Gardening Tbilisi: Another Day in Vake Park

It’s been almost a month since Guerrilla Gardening Tbilisi set up their camp in Tbilisi’s Vake Park to prevent the construction of a 7-storey hotel and its likely later expansion to include car parking areas and access roads. In cooperation with a local environmental organisation they’re currently taking the case to court while the camp serves as the vital early warning centre in case building work now on hold suddenly resumes.

ACCT and Guerrilla Gardening Tbilisi Really, Really Free Market

Another day and another action in Vake Park. This time, however, the public event saw the Alternative Cultural Centre of Tbilisi move their Really, Really Free Market from the reclaimed building at the Hippodrome to the Vake Park camp. Although construction in the park is now on hold, it’s unclear when it might start up again so this show of solidarity is very relevant indeed. And given that I’m photographing both it was particularly interesting to see them come together in one location.

Georgian Environmentalists Halt Construction in Tbilisi’s Vake Park

Braving the recent snowfall and plummeting temperatures, environmentalists have managed to prevent construction from continuing in Tbilisi’s central Vake Park — for now at least. Blockading the road leading to the site where a new hotel is being built, activists from Guerrilla Gardening Tbilisi are now camped out adjacent to the construction site.
