Tajikistan and Foreign Terrorist Fighters

In February I was invited to moderate one of two working groups at a Regional Co-operation and Effective Responses to the Phenomenon of Foreign Terrorist Fighters workshop organised by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Tajikistan alongside the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (UNCTED) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The meeting was financially supported by the British Embassy in Tajikistan and involved Ambassadors, Counter-Terrorism Officials, Civil Society representatives and others.

Ukraine Centre UA’s Svitlana Zalischuk at the Personal Democracy Forum Poland — CEE 2014

Last week I attended the Personal Democracy Forum in Warsaw, Poland, where I was invited to speak on a panel discussing the situation of the independent media and democracy in the South Caucasus. The event had been planned a few months in advance, but coinciding with events next door in Ukraine, including the Russian military intervention in Crimea, the conference’s agenda seemed very timely indeed.

Ukraine Crisis: Crimea Intervention Evokes Memories of 2008 Georgia-Russia War

The crisis in Crimea following Ukraine's succesful Euromaidan protests has naturally evoked memories in Georgia of the August 2008 war with Russia. Several support rallies had already been held in Tbilisi, the Georgian capital, before the Russian military intervened and since then more and more comparisons are being made in the international media.
