EUMM/IWPR Cross Boundary Workshop for Journalists



From the 21st to 25th November, the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) and the South Caucasus office of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) convened a workshop and study visit for journalists from Georgia and its breakaway regions of Abkhazia and Georgia. The workshop was a follow up to one previously held a year ago in Istanbul, Turkey, and held with the intention of also introducing a new group of participants to European Union (EU) structures in Brussels.

Photos on the sidelines of a Cross Border South Caucasus Workshop in Egypt

Late last month through to the beginning of this one I was in Egypt to present for and facilitate a cross-border workshop for journalists and analysts from Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia as well as the disputed territories of Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Nagorno Karabakh. Unfortunately, I didn't pack my proper camera gear and travelled light with my tiny Nikon V1. Obviously, Egypt has an incredible history, but also some incredibly photogenic kids as well.

Five Years On: Ergneti and the South Ossetia ABL

Today marks the fifth anniversary of the August 2008 Georgia-Russia War. Tens of thousands were forced to flee their homes. Yet, despite traveling to Georgia during that period and training many journalists from Georgia, Abkhazia, and South Ossetia since, it wasn’t until last November last year that I once again stepped into the conflict zone, this time to accompany two participants — one from Georgia and the other from Azerbaijan — of a multimedia workshop I was co-trainer for.
