Georgian-Armenian artist, poet, and puppeteer, Armen Hovhannisyan, uses his puppet shows to unite the Armenian, Azerbaijani, and Georgian communities living in the multicultural municipality of Marneuli, Georgia.
During my brief stay in Istanbul on the way back to Tbilisi from a visit home to England I visited the atelier of renowned Turkish jeweller Sevan Bıçakçı. Sadly, like the first time I visited it another stay in Istanbul in 2021, Bıçakçı wasn’t there, but I did get to sit down with his Creative Director, Emre Dilaver. My new piece for The Caspian Post.
The Caspian Post has published my story accompanied by photographs of the Beez Children’s Theatre. I remember them from just after the pandemic and always wanted to do a story on the troupe. I’ve spent a long time covering minority communities in the region – from the Yezidis in Armenia to the ethnic Armenian and Azerbaijani communities here in Georgia. At some point I must post more of this work that I’ve undertaken since 1998.
As if the situation following attempts to hold a Pride Week in Tbilisi couldn’t get any worse, yesterday they did when news surfaced that a TV cameraman who was attacked by a far-right mob had died.
Violence once again marred yet another attempt by Georgia’s marginalised and embattled LGBTQ community to hold Tbilisi Pride events in the capital. For the first two of three events held 1-5 July 2021, however, it seemed as though things might be different this year.
Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso has published my latest update on how the 2020 Karabakh War between Armenia and Azerbaijan might affect Georgia’s two largest ethnic minorities. In 2016, OpenDemocracy published a similar piece of mine following the 4-day war. Local ethnic Armenian and Azerbaijani civil society activists warn that radicalisation among some individuals in the two communities continues, but that the situation still nonetheless remains relatively calm. This is an issue that does need to be monitored, however.
With peace still looking elusive, and all signs pointing to the possibility of renewed fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed territory of Nagorno Karabakh, Stratfor recently published my photo story on ethnic Armenian-Azeri coexistence in Georgia.
